Darren and Jackie Ambrose are the founders of the multi-award-winning salon D&J Ambrose in Pinner, Middlesex. Here they talk about the ways they keep their staff driven...
Set the scene
At D&J we encourage creative energy that’s raw, staying true to our art. This is what our team loves and that’s why you’ll always find them working out ideas on models, and brainstorming with each other between clients. We encourage this 100%. There’s a balance between maintaining a column and a successful salon business, and challenging yourself with creative opportunities such as session work and shoots. We make sure our team is supported in taking part in all the opportunities they are offered. For some people money is their main motivation; for our team it’s creativity. Identify what your salon’s ‘scene’ is and make it clear that you support the team in their pursuit of these ideals.
Suggest the opportunities
Unless you introduce opportunities to your team, they may never know about them. Whether it’s flexible hours, incentives and schemes or photoshoots, assisting at events, art teams or competitions (in and out of the salon), make sure your team knows what’s available to them. People have different motivators. For some people it’s how much they can earn or the responsibility they’re given, for others it’s work-life balance or creativity. Identify what makes your staff tick and don’t be afraid to offer incentives tailored to individuals rather than implementing a blanket approach. One team member might think assisting on a shoot is the best reward possible, for another winning gift vouchers for a shop or restaurant might be the motivation they need.
Support invention
We listen to ideas. The beauty of working as a team is that everyone has a different perspective, from the juniors to the owners, and everyone can contribute to the smooth running of the salon. Create a space for the team to make suggestions – a weekly meeting, a suggestions board or box – and reward successful innovations that you implement.
Direct the delivery
Ideas are important from your team so listen and guide. Whether it’s a practical detail about the way the salon runs or a fabulous new cut or colour technique that could make your salon stand out, make it clear that all suggestions are welcome. Creatively, nurture your team and remember we learn from our mistakes. Criticism should be constructive and accompanied by guidance on how to make things better.
Achieve the goals
In essence try to help it happen. Using our experience, knowledge and energy we can help staff achieve both their individual goals and the salon’s targets, making us stronger as a team.
